A Sign

“Others, testing Him, sought from Him a sign from heaven.”
Luke 11:16 NKJV
“Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.””
Matthew 12:38 NKJV
“For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.”
I Corinthians 1:22-24 NKJV

Have you ever asked for a sign? Better yet been promised a sign? We tend to look for a sign of hope anywhere we can. Something within us tells us, we need the sign to believe. The sign helps justify us putting the full weight of our hope into the promise.

I remember right after God gave me a promise, I was so desperate for a sign. I looked at everything as a possible sign- a color, a word, a feeling, a location. But no sign ever revealed the promise. The Promiser reveals the promise.
Imagine with me that you are standing in your proverbial promised land and are asking God
to give you a sign of your promise. Sounds a bit ridiculous, but I’ve done it to be sure. Our ways, our thoughts, our vision- we can’t comprehend or perceive all that God is doing.

““For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.”
Isaiah 55:9 NKJV
Nothing beyond His word has ever been needed. Our humanness desperately seeks qualifications, parameters, and benchmarks. But the same rules shouldn’t apply to God, should they? What if this Christmas season you rested in God’s promise for you? Not because you see it. Not because you feel it. Not because every thing is great right now, but because God is good. He is faithful and true. Let’s place the full weight of our hope in who Jesus is. Jesus is our sign- He is our hope- He is our promise.

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
Isaiah 7:14
Prayer: Father, thank you for giving us a sign: Jesus Christ himself. Thank you for the reminder that He is our promised land. That in Him and through Him all things are made. I don't have to see it to believe that You are working all things for my good. Let me find rest that you know the beginning from the end. You see every detail and detour and You have the glorious ability to make it all fit. I believe in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
If you haven't put together an advent, you can try a Jesse tree instead. Check out the links below for free printout ornaments and scripture readings. Each day you hang an ornament after you read the corresponding scripture. It's a journey through God's promise of redemption from the beginning.

This is a great reminder for me as it’s so easy to always want just a little bit more of something. He is enough!
