“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14 NKJV
These are the words of Isaiah the prophet 700 years before the birth of Jesus.
Tis the Season we celebrate and remember the gift of Immanuel-God with us.
God has always been a God of nearness, relationship, and covenant. We can see from the beginning when God walked in the garden with Adam and Eve that He has always desired to be with His people. God is a God of covenant who has always had not just a plan to redeem but a plan to be near.
““Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”” Matthew 1:23 NKJV
A virgin birth! We all know how impossible that is- regardless of what movies and fictional stories have done to attempt to normalize virgin births - like there could have ever been more than one.
God Himself promised to be God with us-Immanuel.
It is no surprise some of the most well-known and most loved scripture are of God with us.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”” Joshua 1:9 NKJV
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” Psalms 23:4 NKJV

We are desperate for God to be near and dwell with us. If God has promised, is He a God of His word? Will He do as He has said? Is He with me right now?
I believe, just as the lyrics from Way maker say (underlined portions alters from original lyrics):
🎼 “You are here!” “Even when I don’t see you, you’re here!” “Even when I don’t feel you, you’re here!” “You never stop, you never stop being near!” “That is who you are.”
And yet, we doubt don’t we? Countless reassurances and promises of His nearness and yet we are still unbelieving. We require our senses to be stirred to believe, a work of wonder, or prophetic word to believe the truth He has already spoken.
He promises:
“and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.”Matthew 28:20b NKJV
Jesus’s birth is a promise fulfilled. His birth is a reminder that God wants covenant relationship with His people, that before sin entered the world the Lamb was slain for redemptive covenant with His children.
“All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” Revelation 13:8 NKJV
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14 NKJV
He really wants to be with us!
And He is……
“And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.”Revelation 21:3 NKJV
Thank you Jesus for drawing near and being God with us! Lord, right now would you teach me and my heart to draw near to You- to seek You, Your kingdom, and righteousness the Christmas. Help me to not be distracted by lights, trees, gifts, or lesser things. You are my One thing, my One desire. Jesus, I love you. Amen.
