Wise Council

1 Chronicles 27
Ahithophel was the king’s counselor. Hushai the Arkite was the king’s confident.
1 Chronicles 27:33 NIV
In this passage we have another list of names – people who were in David’s armies and court. Again, I can get a little lost in thesetypes of passages.
But in digging deeper I came upon the verse above and really started to think about the people David had close contact with and then the people I have close contact with. The people I seek when those trials arise.
David needed to have people he could trust and seek out in all trials and situations. We all need wise counsel in our lives with people who will speak truth and point us to obedience in God’s word.
Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in anabundance of counselors there is safety.
Proverbs 11:14
We also need good friends who will pray for us and point us to God. Friends who are wise and loving to speak truth to us when maybe we cannot see that truth.
I know for myself I also hope that I can be that friend and counselor to others. I want to give good, godly counsel and be the friend that will point others to God’s will and his word.
Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future. Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.
Proverbs 19:20-21
This verse above really makes me think about how I must intentionally pursue God’s wisdom with other’s help. There is a real danger in placing too much reliance on my own ability. Which I can do far too often, thinking somehow I know better.
A wise person will be diligent – my word of the year – and at the same time know that wisdom can mean not all plans will work out.
So, we must yield to the will and promises of God and let those counselors and friends speak to us that truth when we can easily become lost.
Prayer – God, I am so thankful that we don’t have to make decisions on our own. That you surround us with good and wise counselors who you have put the spirit of wisdom in. All glory be to your name for the way you lead our lives. Help us to be an instrument in your hand and guide us and help us to invoke that wisdom to others through our friendship and counsel. In Jesus’s name I pray, Amen
